A Brief History of the Jack Russell Terrier

Restaurant owner Brian Fettner operates two Maverick's restaurants in Detroit, with locations in Canton and Woodhaven. Brian Fettner's beloved pet dog, a Jack Russell terrier, inspired the restaurant's name and logo.

The Jack Russell terrier was first bred more than 200 years ago in Southern England when hunting was popular among men of property and men of the church. Reverend John "Jack" Russell, an avid fox hunter, wanted to develop a working terrier to hunt alongside the hounds. Reverend Russell successfully created a bold, athletic, intelligent dog with an intense desire to hunt.

The original Jack Russell terrier had a rectangular body with legs 10 to 12 inches long. However, after the death of Reverend Russell, a new breed of Jack Russell terrier evolved. Called the Parson terrier ("Parson" is another word for Reverend), this new breed had a square body and longer legs – 12 to 15 inches – which were necessary to allow the dogs to hunt in hillier areas. A third breed came later, known as the "Shorty JRT." The Shorty JRT had a rectangular body and the shortest legs in this lineage, measuring only 8 to 12 inches.
